On Sep 23 1861, at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, Henry H. Henshaw, age 22, a resident of Kent County, enlisted as a Private in Company C, 2nd Cavalry, for 3 years.2,8  Mustered Oct 2 1861.  Re-enlisted Jan 5 1864 at Mossy Creek, Tennessee.  Promoted Corporal, then to Sergeant.  Hospital Steward, Apr 1 1864.  Discharged for disability at Nashville, Tennessee, Jan 5 1865.8  

He married Clara A. Patterson, Oct 8 1861, Paris, Mecosta County, Michigan.1,9  (recorded in the courthouse records of Kent County for some reason).5,10,11  Clara, daughter of Jacob Patterson & Rose Ann Carlton, was born Jan 12 1843, Kent County, Michigan.11,12,13  Marriage by N.K. Evarts; witnessed by James E. Patterson.11  Henry was 23 years old and Clara was 19.11  (Marriage recorded in the records of Kent County, Michigan).6,11  

The following article was published in "The Evening Press" (Grand Rapids, Michigan) on Saturday, October 7, 1911:12


Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Henshaw of Chicago celebrate their golden wedding today at the home of Mr. Henshaw's sister, Mrs.. R.J. Stowe, 100 Terrace avenue.  Mr. and Mrs. Henshaw are former residents of Paris township and they have many relatives in this city and vicinity.  The receiving hours were from 2 to 5 o'clock this afternoon and from 7 to 10 tonight.  The rooms throughout the house were handsomely decorated with gold and yellow.  The receiving party stood under a beautiful canopy of yellow chrysanthemums, Mr. and Mrs. Henshaw being seated in gold chairs.  Receiving with them were Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Stowe, Mr. and Mrs. Burt Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt Patterson, Miss Laura Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cook and H.W. Henshaw.  The dining room was decorated in gold and white, yellow roses being used on the table which was lighted with yellow candles.  Mrs. Frank Cook presided in the dining room, and was assisted by nieces of Mr. and Mrs. Henshaw, who are Mrs. Clara Thompson, Mrs. Mattie Brown, Mrs. Lillian Foster, Mrs. Scott Thompson, Miss Marie Cook, Miss Lydia Cook and Mrs. Fred Cook.  Music during the receiving hours was furnished by Miss Edythe Realy, cellist and Miss Edith Shattuck, pianist.  SCOTT THOMPSON was master of ceremonies.  About one hundred invitations were issued.

Widow Clara was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 1920), 157 Clifton, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan:13

Tracey, Emma, head-of-household, age 67, born in Indiana; father born in Ohio; mother born in New York; widow; rented home.
Tracey, Anna M., daughter, age 40, born in New York; father born in New York; mother born in Indiana; single; school teacher.
Henshaw, Clara, lodger, age 76, born in Michigan; father born in New York; mother born in Ohio.
Living in the same dwelling in 1920, but in the next household (as two adjacent apartments are normally shown in the census) was a Laura Paterson, widow, age 7014 (relationship to Clara unknown).  

Clara died Dec 25 1928, at her home, 55 Cutler St. S.W., Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan; age 85y 11m 25d.12
