Mary-Tom Henshaw Leefeldt, '50, of Ross, Calif., March 15, at 69, after a brief illness.  She was a descendent of Massachusetts and California pioneer families.  A devoted gardener and world traveler, she was a longtime supporter of the San Francisco Opera, Symphony and Ballet, and the Merola Foundation.  She was a member of numerous social and civic organizations.  Survivors: her husband, Robert, '49; three sons, Randall, '75, MS '79, Timothy and Christian; her daughter, Irene A. Orum; and four grandchildren.

Robert Leefeldt -- S.F. philanthropist

Robert Christian Leefeldt, a longtime supporter of cultural institutions, died in his sleep at his San Francisco home on New Year's Day.  He was 74.  

Mr. Leefeldt was raised in Pasadena and graduated from Stanford University in 1949.  He married classmate Mary-Tom Henshaw in the following year.  

They moved to Piedmont, and Mr. Leefeldt joined Foote Cone & Belding advertising.  Mr. Leefeldt founded the Piedmont Parks and Art Festival and the Piedmont Parks Improvement Fund.  

He served on many boards, including those of the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Lawrence Hall of Science Advisory Council and the California Historical Society.  

Mr. Leefeldt was a member of the Bohemian and Pacific Union clubs and co-founded the Presidio Performing Arts Foundation.  

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Kitchen of Paso Robles; three sons, Randall Leefeldt of Sacramento, Timothy Leefeldt of San Francisco and Christian Leefeldt of Tempe; and a daughter, Irene Orum of Walnut Creek.  

Contributions can be made to the San Francisco Opera or Piedmont Beautification Foundation.

The "San Francisco Chronicle" (San Francisco, California) also published the following obituary on Sunday, January 12, 2003:7

LEEFELDT, Robert Christian - Died peacefully in his sleep in his San Francisco residence on January 1, 2003.  Born in Los Angeles in 1928, he was raised in Pasadena, graduated Webb School of CA and Stanford class '49.  He was a member of the Gamma Delta Fraternity.  Mr. Leefeldt married Stanford classmate Mary-Tom Henshaw in 1950 and established their home in Piedmont, CA.  He joined Foote Cone Belding Advertising, as an account executive and was head of business development.  Robert was a dedicated environmentalist and founded the Piedmont Parks and Art Festival and the Piedmont Parks Improvement Fund to underwrite the Piedmont Community Improvement Fund and Parks Master Plan.  He was a driving force behind Piedmont's award-winning park restoration program for a 25 year period.  Robert was a long time member of the Board of the SF Opera and for many years co-chaired the SF Opera Fair, the SF Opera Sweepstakes and the Medallion Society.  He chaired the Opera's 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Robert was a long time member on the Board of the SF Boys Chorus and served as President.  He was a member of the Lawrence Hall of Science Advisory Council, Chairman of the Glen Seaborg Endowment Fund, California Historical Society and co-chaired the KQED annual fundraiser "Celebrations of Christmas".  He chaired the Red Cross SF Chapter Opening of the King Tut exhibit at the De Young.  Robert was a founder and President of the Glenbrook Tennis Club, Lake Tahoe, and helped form the League to Save Lake Tahoe.  He was a member of the Bohemian Club and the Pacific Union Club.  His current project was cofounder of the Presidio Performing Arts Foundation, an umbrella organization responsible for creation of a performing arts education center for young people in the SF Presidio.  Robert is survived by his sister, Patricia Kitchen of Paso Robles; his four children, Randall of Sacramento, Timothy of San Francisco, Irene Orum of Walnut Creek and Christian of Tempe, AZ, and his four grandchildren.  Ashes will be scattered with those of his late wife into the sea beneath the cliffs of the Carmel Highlands in a private family ceremony.  Contributions in his memory may be made to the San Francisco Opera, Piedmont Beautification Foundation, or charity of your choice.

Robert Christian Leefeldt, ’49, of San Francisco, January 1, at 74.  A political science major, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta.  He worked for the Foote Cone & Belding advertising firm in Piedmont, Calif., and co-founded the Presidio Performing Arts Foundation in addition to founding the Piedmont Parks and Art Festival and the Piedmont Parks Improvement Fund.  His wife of 47 years, Mary-Tom, ’50, died in 1997.  Survivors: his daughter, Irene Orum; three sons, Christian, Timothy and Randall, ’75, MS ’79; and a sister.
