On Apr 29 1918 Harold Everett Hinshaw was issued a U.S. passport. He declared he was born October 21st 1896 in Marion, Oregon, and his father, H. A. Hinshaw was born in Winchester, Indiana and was then residing in Portland, Oregon. Harold declared he was then residing in Newberg, Oregon, as a student. He declared he intended to depart, May 8th 1918, from the port of New York, sailing on board "to be ascertained", intending to visit France for the purpose of "to serve with the American Friends Reconstruction Unit of the Red Cross". Where the pre-printed form stated "I do solemnly swear" Harold lined-through "swear", replacing it with "affirm". He was recorded as age 21, 5' 11" tall, brown eyes, medium brown hair, fair complexion, square face, small mouth. His passport application was affirmed by H. A. Hinshaw, "General Freight Agent, So. Pac. Co.", Portland, Oregon.5
He married Lestia E. Newlin8 [Lestia N. Newlin2], May 3 19188. Lestia, daughter of Luther Gordon Newlin & Florence Sanders, was born Feb 13 1897, Oregon.2,3,8,9,10
