Alice Hinshaw

Alice Hinshaw, 86, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Aug. 27.  Her memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Norman.

Mrs. Hinshaw was born April 6, 1920, to William and Ethel Larson in Grand Rapids, Mich.  She obtained a B.A. in English from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1941, and a Registered Nurse Diploma from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., in 1945.  She met her husband, Lerner Hinshaw, the love of her life, a captain in the U.S. Army, by being his pen pal for several years during World War II when he was overseas, and sight unseen accepted his marriage proposal.  They married in Grand Rapids on June 28, 1946.  They had four children.  She supported her husband faithfully, family said, as he obtained his Ph.D. in physiology while living in Pasadena, Calif.  They lived in Minneapolis while her husband pursued his research and teaching career.  Mrs. Hinshaw authored a children's book, "Your Body and You."  In 1962, the family moved to Norman.  She worked and volunteered for the American Red Cross.  She was a charter and longtime member of Memorial Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, designed and constructed the church's banners, and participated in church leadership.  Her enjoyments and interests included gardening, bird watching, creative writing of prose and poetry, artwork, classic literature and swimming.  She traveled extensively nationally and internationally with her husband for his research meetings.  She retired with her husband to Roseville, Calif., in 1995, where she was active in Pleasanton Grove Community Church.  She had a lengthy bout with a memory impairment illness which she bravely fought for the last 10 years of her life, family said.

They said she will be greatly missed for her graciousness, childlike curiosity, gentleness and loving kindness.  Her steadfast Christian faith permeated all her soul and now she is truly at rest with the Lord, family said.

Mrs. Hinshaw was preceded in death by her husband.  Survivors include brothers William Larson of Utah and Roger Larson of Fresno, Calif.; son Mark Hinshaw of Seattle; daughter Carol Swope and her husband David of Oklahoma City; son Roger Hinshaw and his wife Margaret of Portland, Ore.; son, Paul Hinshaw and his wife Debra of Scottsdale; seven grandchildren, Erica, Lindsay and Christopher (children of Mark), Stephanie and Taylor,(children of Roger), and Brandon and Amy,(children of Paul); and two great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Kiley, (grandchildren of Paul).
