Living two houses away in 1870 was the family of brother James R. Hanshew.12
It appears that Sylvester had a relationship with his first cousin, Esther Jane Hanshew. The death certificate for Esther Janes's daughter, Rosa Alice Swarts, recorded her parents as Sylvester Hanshaw (born in Pennsylvania) and Esther J. Hanshaw (born in Tipton County, Indiana)13 Also, the marriage record, death certificate, and the obituary for Sylvester's son, Elmer Franklin Hanshew, recorded his parents as Sylvester and Jane Hanshew.2,3,4 Elmer Franklin Hanshew's obituary also mentioned a half brother, Jesse Maroney, and a half sister, Mrs. Lulu Rose. both known children of Esther Jane Hanshew.
He married Ula M. Wright, about 1890.7 Ula was born Oct - 1845, Indiana.7 Ula had been previously married and had one son, Cora M. Wright. It appears from the 1900 census that Cora had owned a farm and Sylvester moved into her household.14

He then married Mary Ellen Stephens, about 1891.5,15 Mary, daughter of Martin M. Stephens & Roxy Ann Mirely, was born about 1863, Indiana.5,15 (1865).10,16 (c1867).9 Mary had been previously married to John M. Wright.5
