Charles started in school at the little stone schoolhouse in Gerrardstown, West Virginia. In 1873 he received a diploma in bookkeeping from a business school in Brucetown, Virginia. In 1874 he received an academic diploma from Loanok Institute in Brucetown.4,5
When he was twenty, Charles went to live with his aunt Rebecca Hunsicker in Jefferson County. He had studied medicine and was ready to enter the University of Pennsylvania when aunt Rebecca pleaded with him to stay with her as long as she lived and she would compensate him accordingly. After her death and settlement of the estate, all that was left for him were some pieces of silver and weaving equipment that had been brought from Germany by his great grandfather.4,5
