Samuel was a prosperous farmer on Mill Creek, near Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, (West) Virginia.    He owned many acres, farmed extensively, and before the Civil War was a slave owner.    The war took practically all their wealth and freed their slaves, although some of the slaves remained with them and worked for years as they had no other home to which they could go.    Two of the slaves, a man and a woman, worked for them for the remainder of their lives.166
