Clifford and his brothers were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 3 1930), living with their grandparents on Campbells Creek Road, Putney, Malden District, Kanawha County, West Virginia:⁵

He married Lola Emily Peterson, Aug 26 1945.^4,7 Lola, daughter of George Alma Peterson & Nora Lavern Simpson Gale, was born Apr 13 1929, Uintah, Weber County, Utah.^4,7,8

Lola died Dec 12 1951, South Gate, Los Angeles County, California; age 22.^4,6,7,8,9 Lola died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a motel room while awaiting Harvey's return from sea^6,9 (see newspaper scans below).

Two years after Lola died, the family was again struck by tragedy when a fire occured in the apartment house where they were living. Son Donnis was killed in the fire, and Harvey and son Richard were also injured.² Harvey filed a law suit against the apartment owners, as reported in the "Ogden Standard-Examiner" (Ogden, Utah) on Sunday, December 27, 1953² and on Sunday, March 7, 1954¹⁰ (see scans below).
