The following biographical sketch of Mart and Wilma was published in the "History of Klickitat County":8
Martin H. (Mart) was the sixth child in the family. He married Wilma Hinshaw Aug. 9, 1914. Her parents, were also pioneers of the county, settling here in the 1870s. Mart spent most of his working years doing highway construction and maintenance. Some years were spent doing cement work such as building sidewalks. He was manager of the state liqueur store for a number of years, retiring in 1957. He was an all-around athlete and continued to be active in baseball and basketball until his late 30's. In 1915, when the Goldendale School Board had not as yet included a coach in the faculty, Mart volunteered and was engaged to coach the football team with no renumeration, except his love of the sport and a desire to be helpful. He always knew and enjoyed all the "kids". He was a volunteer fireman in the Goldendale Fire Department for 46 years, 27 of which he was chief. Friends of Mart (at the time of his death, Jan. 31, 1976) purchased and dedicated an athletic plaque to his memory and presented it to the Goldendale High School. At each commencement program the outstanding athlete (boy or girl) for the year is given a medal and his or her name is placed on the plaque. Wilma and Mart had three children: Howard Martin, born Oct. 13, 1915; Daryl Clyde, born Aug. 24, 1918; and James Mervin, born Jan. 17, 1921. All three served in the US Army Air Corps in W.W.II. Mealtime in his home was usually a time for information and discussion. Very often the dictionary was a part of the table setting.
