Born Feb 25 1839, Griffin Mills, Erie County, New York.173,a,b,c

Charles was shown in the 1860 census (Jul 19 1860), living/working in the household of a Lewis Lincoln in Mt. Pleasant Township, Whiteside County, Illinois:d

Lewis Lincoln, age 39, born in New York; farmer.
Adaline Lincoln, age 29, born in Ohio.
Frank Lincoln, age 21, born in Ohio.
Augusta Rockwell, age 8, born in Illinois; attended school.
Chas Henshaw, age 24, born in Ireland; farm laborer.
In spite of the above showing Charles born in Ireland, it is believed that this census entry refers to this Charles Henry Henshaw, as later Civil War records, which seem to clearly match this Charles Henry Henshaw, show his residence in 1861 was Whiteside County, Illinois.

During the Civil War, Charles served as a private, corporal, then sergeant in Company C, 8th Illinois Cavalry, Sep 2 1861 to Aug 2 1865.a,e,f,g,h    When he enlisted as a corporal on Sep 2 1861, Charles claimed residence in Morrison, (Whiteside County), Illinois.g,i,h    Re-enlisted Nov 30 1863;i,h mustered out Jul 17 1865 at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri.g,i,h    Distinguished Service.i    His service record noted at age 22 he was 5' 7 3/4" tall, dark hair, gray eyes, light complexion.h

He married Celia C. Jones, Oct 9 1871.173,j    Marriage by Rev. Craighead.j

Celia died Jul 16 1886, probably Hand County, South Dakota.j

On Dec 16 1879 Charles H. Henshaw (wife Emma A. Henshaw) applied in South Dakota for an invalid pension as a veteran, corporal, Company C., [..unclear..] Illinois Cavalry.k    In Sep 1881 Chas. H. Henshaw was granted a pension of $4 per month as a wounded veteran, with a gunshot wound in the shoulder.l

He then married Emma A. Chase, c1882.b    (c1894).c    Emma was born Oct - 1857, Iowa.m,b,c,n    Emma had been previously married to an E.M. Chase, by whom she had a son, Claud/Claude Chase, born Jan 1878.m,b,c

During the 1880s and 1890s, Charles acquired several plats of land in Hand County, South Dakota:o,p

Oct 20 1884: 160 acres patent by homestead.
Jan 20 1888: 120 acres plus 40 acres patent by cash sale.
Dec 7 1897: 160 acres patent by homestead.
Note that Judson W. Henshaw #14619 aquired land in Hand County in the same time period.

Charles was shown in the 1890 census Veterans Schedule, Huron, Beadle County, South Dakota:q

Henshaw, Charles H., Private, Company C, 8th Illinois Cavalry; enlisted Sep 2 1861; discharged Aug 2 1865; served 3 years, 11 months.

Curr, Fred G., boarder, age 20, born Nov 1879 in Nebraska; father born in England; mother born in Pennsylvania; single; occupation: drug salesman.

Charles was listed in the 1909 Business Directory of Miller, South Dakota:r

On Oct 27 1919 [year unclear] Emma A. Henshaw applied in South Dakota for a widow's pension as wife of Charles H. Henshaw, veteran, corporal, Company C., [..unclear..] Illinois Cavalry.k

Widow Emma and family were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 8 1920), 215 West 2nd St., Miller, Hand County, South Dakota:n

Henshaw, Emma A., head-of-household, age 63, born in Iowa; parents born in New York; widow; owned home (free); occupation: none.
Henshaw, Anna Chase, granddaughter, age 14, born in South Dakota; parents born in South Dakota; attended school.
Thomas, Henry B., friend, age 18, born in South Dakota; father born in U.S.; mother born in South Dakota; single; occupation: none.

NOTE: There is some uncertainty about Anna, who was shown clearly as "daughter" in the 1910 census, yet shown as "grand daughter" in the 1920 census.    It is unknown if she was the daughter of Charles & Emma (Emma would have been about 48 years old when Anna was born), or if she was actually a granddaughter.    Note that in the 1910 census Emma was shown as having only one child, which was probably her son Claude C. Chase from her first marriage.    Anna was probably the daughter of Claud C. Chase from his apparent short marriage sometime between 1900 and 1910t (she was shown in the 1920 census as Anna Chase Henshaw), however it appears that she was raised by Charles & Emma as Anna Henshaw.
