Fred was a World War I veteran, having served as a Wagoner in the 85th Infantry, stationed with a supply company at Camp Travis, Texas.5,6 On Jun 5 1917 Fred Albert Heid, age 30, had registered for the World War I draft in El Paso County, Colorado. He declared he was born January 14 1887 in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, and was then residing in Fountain, [El Paso County,] Colorado where he was single and a self-employed farmer. He was recorded as short, medium build, brown eyes, brown hair.3
