Carter Lee Henshaw1,2 [Lee Henshaw].

Born Dec 15 1871, Mill Creek, Berkeley County, West Virginia.1,2

Carter participated in the great Oklahoma land rush of 1893.  Prior to opening day he had scouted his choice of property.  When the gun went off on Sep 16 1893 and all of the homesteaders scattered in all directions, he made a run on a sorrel pony straight to his preferred parcel, staked it, filed it and claimed that parcel of land near the Salt Fork River.1,2,4

He married Elizabeth Ann Stewart1,2 [Lizzie Ann Stewart5], Feb 25 18971,2, Sedgwick County, Kansas1,2.  Elizabeth, daughter of Theopolis + Mary Stewart2,3,6, was born Aug 2 18772,3,6 [18767], Kansas2,3,6.

Carter and Elizabeth lived for five years on the homestead in a sod house that Carter had built.  He finished a small one-room frame house just prior to the birth of son Paul in 1902.1,2

Carter was a wheat farmer, farming the homestead until 1908 when he purchased the "Fraction" which he still owned at the time of his death.2  He accumulated several hundred acres of fertile land in Oklahoma as well as citrus lands in Brownsville, Texas.1

In 1917 Elizabeth came into an inheritance, so she then left Carter and took her two boys to live in Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas.  At that time Carter moved to Texas.2

Elizabeth and children were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 16-18 1920), 1317 Hackney St., Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas:3

Henshaw, Lizzie, head-of-household, age 43, born in Kansas; parents born in Ohio; married; owned home; occupation: none.
Henshaw, Paul, son, age 17, born in Oklahoma; father born in Virginia; mother born in Kansas; attended school.
Henshaw, Luther, son, age 13, born in Oklahoma; father born in Virginia; mother born in Kansas; attended school.
Henshaw, Carl, son, age 11, born in Oklahoma; father born in Virginia; mother born in Kansas; attended school.

In 1921 Elizabeth and the two younger boys moved to Texas and rejoined Carter, where they lived in a tent while he built a garage for them to live in until a house could be built.  They then separated again, Elizabeth, Carl and Luther going back to Winfield, Kansas, while Carter went back to Tonkawa, Oklahoma.2

Carter and Elizabeth were finally divorced in 1925.  She kept the homestead and he kept the "Fraction".1,2

Carter Lee Henshaw died May 16 1958, Tonkawa, Kay County, Oklahoma.2  On his gravestone, which he personally arranged before his death, are the words "Pioneer of Oklahoma".2

Elizabeth died Jul 5 1963, buried Section F, Row 1, Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near Goddard, Sedgwick County, Kansas.2,7,8
