James' death was reported in "The Coshocton Tribune" (Coshocton, Ohio) on Thursday evening, November 5 1953:1


Word has been received by Launie Hanshaw, Gilmore, that his son, Pvt. James S. Hanshaw, 24, died of internal injuries in Germany, where he was stationed.  

No further details were available.  The telegram was signed by Major General William E. Bergin, adjutant general, who said that a letter giving more information would follow.  

A combat veteran of Korea, where he was wounded, Pvt. Hanshaw was born at Diana, W. Va., Dec. 30, 1928.  He was sent to Germany about seven months ago,

In addition to his father he is survived by two sisters, Miss Emma Jean Tanshaw, Dennison, and Miss Shirley Hanshaw, and one brother, Keith, all of the home.  His mother is deceased.

Germany Is Returned

The body of Pvt. James S. Hanshaw, Gilmore, who died of injuries suffered when he was struck by a truck while on duty Oct. 30 in Germany, arrived today at Dennison, O.  

A Purple Heart veteran of the Korean war, Pvt. Hanshaw entered the service in 1948 and first was sent to Germany in 1949.  At the outbreak of the Korean war he was transferred to Korea, where he was wounded in action in 1951.  Following his return to the United States he was again sent to Germany, where he was servnig [sic] with the 27th division.  

He is survived by his father, Launie Hanshaw, Gilmore, two brothers, Keith of the home and Ronnie of Diana, W. Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Emogene Shupp, Dennison, O., and Chirley [sic] of the home.  His mother is deceased.  

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the West Union church at Gilmore in charge of Rev. George Shurtz and Rev. Arthur Williams.  Burial will be in Union cemetery at Uhrichsville.  

Military rites will be conducted at the grave by the Gnadenhutten American Legion Post.  

Friends will be received at the Botimer funeral home in Gnadenhutton [sic] from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and until noon Saturday.
