Mary Knight was born on what was then the Dr. Curtis Knight farm, south of Bloomington, Illinois. She lived with her parents on her father's farm, which was adjacent to the Curtis Knight farm. She attended the #7 school and graduated there.17
Rolla and Mary spent their early married years in the country south of Bloomington, Illinois, until about 1896, after which they lived into Bloomington.17

After her children were grown, Mary became involved in the establishment and development, and the subsequent operation of the Woman's Exchange, which was established in 1910.17 In 1920 she entered the school of napropathy in Chicago from which she graduated, and she then took up practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.17

In 1927 Mary returned from Philadelphia and took up residence with her daughter, Narola, where she remained the rest of her life.17

Mary's obituary was published as follows:17
Mrs. Mary K. Hinshaw, 84, of 1012 MacArthur Ave. died at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital. She had been in failing health for 2 1/2 years.
Mrs Hinshaw was taken to the Beck Memorial Home where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. George Stuart will officiate and burial will be in Scoggin Cemetery.
The former Mary Knight was born south of Bloomington Aug. 28, 1871, the eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. James P. Knight. She and Rolla Hinshaw were married Jan. 15, 1890. Mr. Hinshaw preceded his wife in death.
Mrs. Hinshaw was a member of the Shirley Christian Church and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 50.
Surviving are two sons, George K. of Akron, Ohio, J. Deane of R. R. 3; one daughter, Mrs. Robert L. Armstrong, with whom Mrs. Hinshaw made her home; two brothers, George W. Knight or R. R. 3 and James C. Knight of 5 Harbord Dr.; one sister, Miss Adelma Knight of 22 White Pl., 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
In addition to Mrs. Hinshaw's husband, two sisters preceded her in death.

Mary has been described as "a serious person, was exceedingly responsible, was immaculate in all things. She was a very hard worker, was loyal to her family, and a very good mother. She was always volunteering to help those who were sick or disabled in any way".17
