After his mother died in 1895, Herman and his brother Harold were left in the care of their mother's parents (and their father moved away to Michigan in 1897). Herman and Harold were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 12 1900), living in their maternal grandparents household in Randolph County, Indiana:2
Pickett, John W., head-of-household, age 64, born Aug 1835 in Indiana; father born in North Carolina; mother born in Maryland; married 41 years; farmer; owned farm.
Pickett, Fannie, wife, age 57, born Nov 1842 in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; married 41 years; 3 children, 1 living.
Hinshaw, Herman J., grandson, age 16, born Jan 1884 in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; farm laborer.
Hinshaw, Harold H., grandson, age 11, born Jan 1889 in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; farm laborer.
Herman J. Hinshaw died 1904, buried Jericho Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana.1 Herman was just beginning his training as a Quaker minister when he died from Typhoid Fever.1
