James S. Doty1,4 [James C. Doty5].

Born Jul 25 1824, Ohio.1,3,6,7,8

James was a school teacher and itinerant preacher.1

He married Eliza Ann Dalton1,5,9,10,11 [Eliza Ann Dalton5, Annie Dolton1, Anna Dolton1], Aug 18 18591,5,9,10,11, Hecla, Lawrence County, Ohio1,5,9,10,11.  Eliza Ann Dalton, daughter of Willis Dolton & Rebecca Pickeral, was born Jun 27 1841, Virginia.1,2,3,12

James had been Annie's school teacher.1

James S. Doty died Sep 11 18694,8,13 [Sep 14 18691,3], Patoka, Marion County, Illinois4,8,13; age "47 Yr"4,8,13.  James died from "flux" (now called dysentery), with severe diarrhea, as did his brother Allen in the same county in the same month.8

Widow Annie and family were shown in the 1870 census (Jun 28 1870), Marion County, Illinois:2

Doty, Ann, age 28, born in Virginia; keeping house.
Doty, Wm F, age 12, born in Ohio.
Doty, Mary, age 10, born in Ohio.
Living nearby in 1870 was the family of James' brother Allen.14

After James' death, Annie placed son William with some farmers to work for his schooling.  Taking daughter Molly with her she did housekeeping until1 Mar 6 1873,15 when she remaried to a Mr. David Sutton Cozad (Sr.), Mar 6 1873 in Patoka.1,15  Annie and David Cozad had a son, James M. Cozad, born c1875, Illinois12

Annie and family were shown in the 1880 census (Jun 12 1880), Marion County, Illinois:12

Cozaad, David, age 79, born in Virginia; father's birthplace unknown; mother born in Virginia; farmer.
Cozaad, Annie, wife, age 39, born in Virginia; father's birthplace unknown; mother born in Virginia; keeps house.
Cozaad, James M., son, age 5, born in Illinois; father's birthplace unknown [sic]; mother born in Virginia.

After Mr. Cozad's death (Dec 11 1891)13 she worked at various occupations.1  She married to George W. Eaglin of Patoka, Jun 14 1893,1,15 DeWitt County, Illinois15

Eliza Ann Dalton died Sep 17 1895.1,3

After Annie died George W. Eaglin remarried to a Jessie Free, Sep 27 1899, Marion County, Illinois.15

In January of 1902 a letter was sent to son William Franklin Doty; the letter itself is not extant but the envelope was saved.  On the back of the envelope, probably in the handwriting of granddaughter Mary Beatrix Doty, was written "Dads Relatives" (see scan below).  The return address on the envelope shows no name, but only the address 1222 Sherman Ave, "Alleg City Pa" (Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania - in 1907 incorporated into the city of Pittsburgh).  In 1902 Agnes Doty was living at that address, so it is reasonable to conclude that Agnes Doty was apparently closely related to James Doty (her father was a John Doty who was born about 1816).
