Born May 5 1935, Parma, Canyon County, Idaho.1,3,4,5

Dewey started riding with the local Boise area horse trainer, James Nazworthy, and got to ride on several Northwest tracks, along with such greats as Eddie Arcaro and Bill Shoemaker, and knew Idaho local retired jockey Gary Stevens.  On Labor Day weekend 1956, in his final race as an apprentice at 21 years of age, Dewey's mount clipped the heels of the horse in front of him and Dewey was thrown.  He did several somersaults and landed each time on his head.  He was in a coma for 40 days with severe brain injuries and not expected to ever walk, talk or see again if he did survive at all.  He dodged the odds and did come out of the coma, but was badly handicapped for the rest of his life.6

Dewey Wilford Henshaw

Dewey Wilford Henshaw went to be with his Lord Jesus on April 12, 2013.  He was born on May 5, 1935 in Parma, Idaho to Reuben Edgar Henshaw and Irene Patterson Henshaw.  He graduated from Homedale High School and was a professional jockey until a riding accident ended his career.  He later married Inez Marie Henshaw.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marla and George Freeman of Nampa; three grandsons, Shawn, Glen and Josh; his wife of twenty years, Bettie Darrah Henshaw; four step children, Sherylynn and Jery Gibson, Sam and Joan Darrah of Boise, Lon and Patty Darrah of Caldwell, Layton Darrah of Boise; one sister, Mabel Glosenger of Oregon; two nieces, Beckie Sommers of Greenleaf and Monica Henion of Washington.  He was preceded in death by his father, Reuben Henshaw, his mother, Irene Henshaw; one brother, Dan Henshaw of Tacoma; and one sister, Dorothy Hatch of Nampa.

We will miss him.  When we look at a rainbow, we will be reminded of him; when we watch a horserace, we will be reminded of the career he loved so much.
