Born 8-24-1814, Marlborough MM, North Carolina.2,3,6,7  

At Marlborough MM on 7-11-1833, Jabez was granted a certificate to Center MM to marry.6  

He married Mary Lamb, 7-24-1833, Center MM, North Carolina.1,3,4,6,8  Mary, daughter of Henry+Rebecca Lamb, was born 9-9-1817, Randolph County, North Carolina.2,3,5,7,9,10  

On 8-17-1833, the new bride Mary was granted a certificate to Marlboro MM [sic].6  

On 9-12-1833, Jabez was granted a certificate from Marlborough MM to Spiceland MM, Henry County, Indiana.  On the same date, Marlborough MM received a certificate for Mary from Center MM, dated 8-17-1833, which was endorsed to Spiceland MM, Indiana.6  

At Spiceland MM on 11-20-1833, Jabez was received on a certificate from Marlborough MM, N.C., endorsed over to Duck Creek MM.  Mary was received on a certificate from Providence MM, N.C., endorsed by Marlborough MM and endorsed over to Duck Creek MM.2  On 11-20-1833 Spiceland MM recorded:7

A certificate for Jabez Hinshaw from Marlborough monthly meeting North Carolina dated the 12th of the 9th month last was read and by request endorsed to Duck Creek monthly meeting.

At Duck Creek MM on 11-21-1833, Jabez was received on a certificate from Marlborough MM, endorsed by Spiceland MM.  On the same day Mary was received on a certificate from Center MM, endorsed by Marlborough and by Spiceland MM to Duck Creek MM.2  On 11-21-1833 Duck Creek MM [Henry County, Indiana] women friends recorded:7

One [certificate] for Mary Hinshaw from Center monthly meeting dated 17th of 8th month 1833, with, an endorsement from Marlborough monthly meeting to Spiceland monthly meeting and by that endorsed to this.

At Spiceland MM on 2-19-1840, Jabez was appointed Librarian for the Duck Creek Preparative Meeting.2  

Jabez and family are shown in the 1840 census, Henry County, Indiana, as follows:11

Duck Creek MM on 11-23-1843 recorded "Jabez, Clear Springs PM, complained of for identifying himself with the late Separatists.  Disowned 2-22-1844."2  

Jabez Hinshaw died 6-29-1844.3,5  Estate settlement: Henry County, Indiana Circuit Court, Probate Appearance Book 1, page 13, 1844;12 Probate Hearing Book 1, pages 20, 56.12  

At Duck Creek MM on 6-26-1845, Mary & family were granted a certificate to Westfield MM.2  

At Westfield MM on 8-7-1845, Mary and children Henry, Seth, Elcana, & Hannah Ellen were received on a certificate from Duck Creek MM.13  

Mary remarried to Edward Norton, Sep 16 1846, Henry County, Indiana.1,2,14,15,16,17  

It appears that Edward had been previously married and had a son Dennis Norton.9  Mary and Edward Norton had children:9,10

Rebecca Norton, born c1848, Indiana.
William Norton, born c1854, Indiana.
Mary Norton, born c1858, Indiana.

On 4-22-1847 Duck Creek MM [Henry County, Indiana] women friends recorded:7

A communication was received from Westfield Monthly Meeting requesting us to treat with Mary Norton on behalf of that meeting for neglecting the attendance of our religious meetings, joining the Methodist Society, and accomplishing her marriage contrary to our discipline.  Ann Reece, Rebecca Macy, and Elizabeth Spencer are appointed to meet with her therefor and report to next meeting.
On 5-20-1847 Duck Creek MM [Henry County, Indiana] women friends recorded:7
The com. to meat with Mary Norton [..unclear..] deviation, report some attention, they are continued to the service and report to next meeting.
On 7-22-1847 Duck Creek MM [Henry County, Indiana] women friends recorded:7
The clerks inform that they have attended to their appointment in Mary Nortons case.

At Westfield MM on 9-9-1847, Mary Norton (formerly Hinshaw) was disowned for "marriage out of unity, test[ament?] sent to Duck Creek MM."13  On 9-9-1847 Westfield MM women friends recorded:7

Men friends produced a testimony of denial against Mary Norton which was read approved & signed.  Elizabeth Reeve and Anna M Pennington are appointed to write to Duck Creek monthly meeting requesting them to offer her a copy thereof inform her of her right to appeal on our behalf and inform us when complied with, and report to next meeting. *

Mary Norton (formerly Hinshaw) who has had a right of membership in the society of Friends has neglected the attendance of our religious meetings joined the Methodist Society and accomplished her marriage contrary to our discipline, for which she has been treated with without the desired effect we therefore disown her from being a member with us.

On 1-20-1848 Duck Creek MM [Henry County, Indiana] women friends recorded:7

The Friends appointed to offer Mary Norton a copy of the testimony of disownment against her on behalf of Westfield Monthly Meeting report it has been attended to Abigail Williams and Jennett Pickering are appointed to inform her that meeting thereof and report to next meeting.
On 2-24-1848 Duck Creek MM [Henry County, Indiana] women friends recorded:7
The friends appointed in Mary Norton's case report the service performed.
On 3-9-1848 Westfield MM women friends recorded:7
Received a communication from Duck Creek Monthly Meeting of women Friends informing us that they had offered Mary Norton a copy of the testimony of denial against her, agreeably to our request.

At Duck Creek MM on 4-25-1850, Henry, Seth, Elkanah, & Hannah Ellen, children of Jabez, deceased, & wife Mary (now Mary Morton) were received on a certificate from Westfield MM.2

Rebecca Ann Norton, age 2, born in Indiana.
In 1850, son Elkana was living with Jabez's sister Dianna,18 and son Henry was living with Mary's parents.19  

Mary and family were shown in the 1860 census (Aug 2 1860), Harrison Township, Henry County, Indiana:10

Mary Norton, age 43, born in North Carolina.

Mary died Nov 28 1869, age 52y 2m 1d.20
