John Hinshaw [ID 00055] | Click here to switch to Ahnentafel view: |
Born 8-11-1747, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.1,3,9,10,11,12,13,14,15
This John was shown in "The Hinshaw and Henshaw Families" (1) as John 2J (pg 21) and also as John 1P (pg 53). The authors apparently thought these were two different Johns, but the Quaker records clearly show this John was the son of Jesse & Abigail Hinshaw. Note also that the Hinshaw book claims he "was born in England about the year 1750. He emigrated first to Scotland, thence to the North of Ireland, and from thence to America, settling in North Carolina (near Greensboro) about the year 1770".3 But he was not born in England, he was born in Ireland16 and very probably never travelled to Scotland. His birth date was recorded in Irish Quaker records as 11th of 8th Month, 1747.11,12,14,15 But later Quaker records in North Carolina show his birth date as 11th of 10th Month, 17471,16 - apparently the recordkeeper at Cane Creek MM adjusted his birth date to account for the calendar change of 1752.
On 6-1-1771 John was disowned from Cane Creek MM (reason unknown).1
On 2-24-1776, John Hinshaw was received at New Garden MM on a certificate from Cane Creek MM dated 3-2-1776.1
He married Ruth (Pike) Weisner1,5,6,10,13 [Ruth Pike, Susan Pike3], Feb 24 17761,5,6,10,13, New Garden, North Carolina1,5,6,10,13. Ruth was the widow of Michael Weisner.
On 4-27-1776, John Hinshaw, son of Jesse, Chatham County, was reported married to Ruth Weisner at the New Garden MM.1
Ruth, daughter of John Pike & Abigail Overman, was born Jun 18 1744, Hopewell MM, Frederick County, Virginia.2,10,13,17,18
Note that John's sister Abigail married Macajah Weisner, son of Ruth by her first husband Michael Weisner, i.e. John became step-father to his own brother-in-law!1,10,13,18 Also, Ruth's sister Susannah Pike married William Lee, whose son Ephraim Lee married Sarah Hinshaw.
Ruth's maternal grandparents were Ephraim Overman and Sarah Belman. Her grandmother's Belman line has extensive connections to the royalty of much of Europe.17
The book "Hinshaw and Henshaw Families" claims (page 53) that John married a Susan Pike, of Virginia, about the year 1780 and that these children were born of John & Susan. But this is contrary to Quaker records and seemingly impossible as two of the children were born before 1780.
John and family were shown in the 1790 census, Stokes County, North Carolina, as follows:19
Ruth died 12-2-1795, Deep River MM, Guilford County, North Carolina.1,10,13
He then married Ann (Haisley) Philips [Ann Haisley, Ann Philips, Ann Phillips1,13], 8-16-1797, Deep River MM, North Carolina.
Several entries in the Quaker records give clues to this marriage:
Deep River, 12-2-1795: Ruth Hinshaw, wife of John Hinshaw, died. From all of the above, one can conclude the following convoluted scenario:Deep River, 5-1-1797: Ann Philips & children (sons John & Joseph) received by request.
Deep Creek, 6-3-1797: William Hinshaw received on a certificate from Cane Creek MM.
Deep River, 8-16-1797: John Hinshaw, Stokes County, married Ann Philips.
Deep River, 8-16-1797: Ann Philips, widow, Stokes County, married John Hinshaw.
Deep River, 9-22-1800: John Hinshaw died.
Deep Creek, 4-3-1802: William Hinshaw granted a certificate to Deep River, to marry.
Deep River, 4-7-1802: Ann Hinshaw, widow of John, daughter of George & Sarah Haisley, married William Hinshaw.
Deep River, 4-7-1802: William Hinshaw, Surry County, son of Jacob & Rebeckah, married Ann Hinshaw.
Deep River, 7-5-1802: Ann Hinshaw & two daughters granted certificates to Deep Creek MM.
Deep River, 7-5-1802: Joseph (Philips), son of Ann Hinshaw, granted certificate to Deep Creek MM.
Deep Creek, 8-7-1802: Ann Hinshaw & daughters, Ann & Mary Philips, & son, John Philips received on a certificate from Deep River MM, dated 1802,7,5.
Deep Creek, 11-5-1803: Ann Philips, daughter of John & Ann, Surry County, married Jonathan Mendenhall.
Ann Haisley married John Philips and had children John, Joseph, Ann, and Mary.John Hinshaw died 9-22-1800, Deep River, North Carolina.1,10John Philips died sometime before 1797.
Meanwhile, John Hinshaw had married Ruth Weisner and had 7 children.
Ruth died in 1796.
Widower John Hinshaw married widow Ann (Haisley) Philips in 1797.
John Hinshaw died in 1800.
Widow Ann (Haisley) (Philips) Hinshaw married William Hinshaw.
John's will, dated Sep 19 1800,20 probated in Stokes County in 1800, is recorded in the North Carolina State Archives (Raleigh, NC); Will Book 1, page 167.21
