Born Dec 21 1941, Reva, Culpeper County, Virginia.1,2

Roland Thomas Henshaw died Jan 8 1942, at his home, near Haywood, Madison County, Virginia; buried Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Haywood, Madison County, Virginia.1,3  Note: although Roland's gravestone is inscribed with a death date of Jan 8 1943, his father apparently affirmed that he actually died Jan 8 1942.2

Roland's obituary was published as follows:3

The entire community was distressed to hear of the death of little Roland Thomas Henshaw, the three weeks old son of James Henry Henshaw and Iola Carpenter Henshaw of near Haywood, who departed this life at 7:00 Thursday night, January 8, at the home of his parents following a short illness.

The passing of this little son leaves a vacancy in the home and even a greater vacancy in the hearts of the father and mother.

Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, James Henry Henshaw, 2nd., age three years; also, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sim Carpenter of Brightwood.

The funeral service was conducted by the family pastor, Elder A. J. Garland on Saturday afternoon from the residence with interment in the Henshaw section of the Mt. Carmel cemetery.

The little white and blue casket was borne to its resting place by Willis H. Smith, a friend of Washington, D. C., and Egbert Carpenter, an uncle of Brightwood.

There were several beautiful floral tributes which were carried by Mrs. Ann B. Henshaw, Mrs. Hannah Carpenter, Mrs. Sarah Carpenter, and Misses Annie Laura and Dicie Carpenter.

Arrangements for the funeral were made by the Geest Funeral Home of Culpeper and Criglersville and among those who attended the funeral from Washing[ton] and Arlington were Mrs. Jesse C. Henshaw, Mr. Willis H. Smith, Mrs. Wm. A. Long, William, Henry, Juanita and Rosie Long; and Mrs. A. J. Garland.
