Walter Lewis Hinshaw
BURLINGTON -- Mr. Walter Lewis Hinshaw, 88, of 3331 Alamance Road, died at his home on Saturday, February 11, 2006, after a period of declining health.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Holly Springs Friends Meeting in Ramseur. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Rick Sessoms and the Rev. Suzanne Shoffner. Burial will follow in the Meeting House Cemetery.
Mr. Hinshaw was born and raised in Randolph County in the Holly Springs Friends community south of Ramseur. He was the son of the late Carl C. Hinshaw and the late Fleta Allen Hinshaw. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Mrs. Hazel Stout Hinshaw. He was the husband of the late Florence Macon Hinshaw.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. After the war, Mr. Hinshaw and his wife Florence moved to Burlington and operated Hinshaw's Mill Outlet for over 20 years. He was also a traveling yarn salesman. He held two U.S. Patents.
Mr. Hinshaw attended Shiloh Presbyterian Church but maintained his ties to the Holly Springs Friends Meeting. He lived his life as a fine example for his family and all who knew him. He was a truly charitable man who, throughout his life, sought out ways to help others. He obtained his pilot's license at age 65 and was an accomplished folk storyteller and writer. He also previously served on the Burlington Planning Commission.
He is survived by two sons, Larry L. Hinshaw and his wife Nancy of Burlington and C. Lynn Hinshaw and his wife Mary Ann of Morehead City; and a sister Alyssis Grimes of Ramseur. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Brian L. Hinshaw and his wife Tricia of Asheville, Julie Hinshaw Sywassink and her husband Chris of Twin Bridges, Mont. and Lisa Hinshaw Miles and her husband Michael of Fuquay Varina. There are also four great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by three half brothers, Myron Hinshaw, Paul Hinshaw and Frank Hinshaw and a half sister Eleanor Gunter.
The family will receive friends at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 p.m. today and other times the family will be at the residence.
