Girl Scouts receive $150,000 gift for troop house

The Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council received a $150,000 gift from Anderson Chandler and his four daughters to provide a troop house named in the memory of Patricia Hinshaw Chandler.  

The Patricia H. Chandler Troop House will be built at Camp Daisy Hindman, near the camp's infirmary and adjacent to the dining hall.  The house is expected to open in the spring of 2000, and it will have men's and women's restrooms, a kitchen, a mechanical room, storage, a multipurpose room and a fireplace.  

The gift will allow troops from the Kaw Valley Council district to use the camp year-round.  

Patricia H. Chandler died April 24, 1999, after a long illness.  She and Anderson Chandler married in 1948 and lived in Topeka.  

Patricia Chandler was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader while her daughters were young.  She also was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Parent-Teacher Association, president of Chapter CS of the PEO Sisterhood, Junior Social Service, West Hills Garden Club and Western Sorosis.  She and Anderson Chandler were the first members of the Alex De Toqueville Society of the United Way of Greater Topeka.  She also served several terms on the board of the Salvation Army in Topeka.  

Anderson Chandler is chairman and president of Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co.  The Chandler daughters are Cathleen Chandler Stevenson, Dallas, Cynthia Chandler Hoad, Prairie Village, Corliss Chandler Miller, Overland Park, and Colette Chandler Gacher, Lawrence.  All four were Brownies and Girl Scouts, and all attended Camp Daisy Hindman.  

Also, the Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council will reopen its ToKaVaCa Troop House in Topeka during an open house from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday.  The council serves 13 counties in northeast Kansas, including Brown, Clay, Douglas, Geary, Jackson, Jefferson, Marshall, Nemaha, Pottawatomie, Riley, Shawnee, Wabaunsee and Washington.

Girl Scouts to dedicate building

Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council will have an open house and dedication ceremony at 10:30 a.m. today at the Patricia H. Chandler Troop House, a year-round facility at Camp Daisy Hindman.  

The troop house was made possible through a gift from Anderson Chandler, chairman and president of Fidelity State Bank & Trust Co., and his four daughters.  The gift of $150,000 was in honor of Chandler's late wife, Patricia Hinshaw Chandler.  

The one-story building is near the camp's infirmary and adjacent to the camp dining hall.  It is equipped with men's and women's restrooms, kitchen, mechanical room, storage, a multi-purpose sleep room and a fireplace.  The house will allow troops, from across Kaw Valley Council's 13 northeast Kansas counties to use Camp Daisy Hindman year-round.  

Patricia Chandler died April 24, 1999, after lengthy illness.  She was a dedicated mother serving as a Girl Scout and Brownie Girl Scout leader.
