When David was a small boy (sometime between 1848 and 1856), his widowed father moved the family from Ohio to White County, Indiana, where descendents have stayed to this day.4
On Nov 10 1864 David Hinshaw enlisted as a private in Company G, 46th Indiana Infantry. Mustered out Sep 4 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. Distinguished Service.9
He married America Hickman, Dec 21 1865, White County, Indiana.4,10,11 America was born about 1843, Ohio.2 Note that David's father's third wife was a Hickman (relationship unknown).

David's funeral was noted in the "Pharos-Tribune" (Logansport, Indiana) on Wednesday, December 27, 192218 (see scan below).
Malissa A. Hinshaw applied for a Civil War Pension as widow of David Hinshaw, veteran of Company G, 46th Indiana Infantry.12
Malissa died Jul 16 1926, near Pittsburg, Carroll County, Indiana; age 67.19
