George's birth was recorded in the 1888 birth record book of the city of Boston, Massachusetts, with the place of birth recorded as Rochester, N.Y.7,15 (his parents were recorded as residents of Boston at that time).7,15 His birth was recorded as George Matthew Henshaw, son of Thomas & Catharine Henshaw,7,15 but in later records he seems to have adopted the name John.
