John Hinshaw, 84, Imperial County businessman, educator and community activist since 1940, died Wednesday in Imperial Valley Convalescent Hospital, El Centro. Services were yesterday in Holtville United Methodist Church, under direction of Hems Mortuary, El Centro. Burial, under Masonic Lodge auspices, was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Hinshaw was Holtville Citizen of the Year in 1971 and held various offices in the Holtville Chamber of Commerce, including that of president in 1978 and 1979. He had received the Methodist Heritage Award in recognition of his work with the church. He had taught in Central High School in El Centro and in Central Junior College while working toward establishment of Imperial Valley College. He was professor of mathematics at Imperial Valley College from the time it was established in 1960 until he retired in 1972. He had worked with Dr. Benjamin Lehr to assist Imperial Valley residents who required kidney dialysis, at first by establishing van transportation to and from UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. Later, he, Dr. Lehr and other residents in the group interested in dialysis, with cooperation of Dr. Horatio Rodiles, got a dialysis unit established at Pioneer Memorial Hospital and, last fall, an independent free-standing dialysis unit in El Centro. Mr. Hinshaw was born Jan. 30, 1906, in Beloit, Kan. He grew up in Kansas and west Texas, until his parents, the late David Z. and Lulu E. McKee Hinshaw, homesteaded in Yuma Valley, Ariz. He graduated from Yuma High School and delivered mail in the area before entering Whittier College. He also studied at Arizona State Teachers College. He earned his bachelor of science and master of science degrees at USC. He and Florence Marie Walin were married in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1932. He taught school in Yuma and Somerton for eight years before settling in Holtville in 1940. He and his brother, joined later by Buster Knight and Tommy Clark, established Hinshaw Brothers Texaco Service center. He was an active member of Holtville United Methodist Church. He was a longtime active member of Chamber of Commerce. He was a Mason, a member of Masonic Lodge 425, Scottish Rites bodies and Order of Eastern Star. He was a supporter of, and volunteer in, numerous Imperial Valley projects and developments. He was active in Imperial Valley Red Cross, United Way and Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Florence Marie; a son and two daughters, Carl A. of El Centro, Mary Ellen Boyer of Lemon Grove and Marjorie Cook of Brawley; a brother and two sisters, Paul of Vista, Mary Sharp of Porterville and Wilma Cantrell of Pasadena; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
