James' obituary was published as follows:10

James M. Hinshaw, son of Jesse and Hannah Hinshaw was b. Oct 17, 1831 in Pennsylvania Township, Parke Co In near Annapolis on the farm that his father entered in 1828 where he spent all of his life and where he died October 5, 1914, aged 83 years 11 months 19 days.  On the farm he engaged himself in the toil and hardships of helping clear and improve the land.  He believed in aggression and progression and development but was himself a mediocre not so swift but sure.  Early in life he established the blessed boon of a Christian life, uniting with the UB Church at the Old Cross Roads Church at age 18.  Jacob Kenoyer was pastor and Andy Wimsett evangelist.  Later when said church was abandoned and a new church built in Annapolis Mr. Hinshaw took membership there until it was abandoned when he placed his membership in the Marshall UB Church, holding membership there at his death.  He was united in marriage to Emily Morgan, daughter of Kenchen and Sarah Morgan, Jan 25, 1855.  Rev Ira Mater officiating.  Of this union no children were born but they took in their home Miss Chloe Barker whom they cherished and loved as their own.  On December 3, 1895, the shadows of death gathered about the home and in the evening, when the wings of night kissed away the sunlight of day, the death angel called and sister Emily Hinshaw answered the summons of leaving hearts sad and the home lonely.  After sister Hinshaw's death, Miss Barker assumed the cares and responsibility of the home, doing what she could to make it pleasant for her uncle until his death.  As to his education, it was limited.  He was self made, stern and did what was right from conviction and duty.  In his affliction he was patient and enduring, often expressing himself as being ready to die.  So we trust our loss is his eternal gain.  Reluctantly we say farewell, but cherish the hope in that brighter cloudless morning we may meet again.  Funeral services were held at the ME Church, Annapolis Wed Oct 7 at 10 o'clock, Rev O. P. Cooper officiating, assisted by rev Shrigley of Marshall and Rev M. F. Sherrill of Annapolis.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Clara Chamness, Mrs. Ruth Anderson, Frank and John Coffin, and Mrs. Mayme Stanley organist.  Pallbearers were old friends of Mr. Hinshaw.

The following biographical sketch of James M. Hinshaw appears in the book "History of Parke County, Indiana" by JH Beadle:11

James M. HINSHAW, farmer Annapolis, was b. in Parke Co, IN Oct 17, 1832 and is the son of Jessie and Hannah Hinshaw, who are natives of NC.  His father was born in 1797, and died in Parke Co in 1864, and his mother was b. March 14, 1798, and now resides with Mr. Hinshaw.  They came from NC to Parke Co in 1828 and settled on the farm where Mr. Hinshaw now lives, and where he was born.  He has therefore been a resident of the county all his life, and his pursuit in life has been that of a farmer.  Jan 25, 1855, he married Emily MORGAN, daughter of Kinschen and Sarah Morgan, who were natives of NC and came to Parke Co. in 1830.  Mrs. Hinshaw was b. in NC in 1830.  Her father was b. April 4,1 797 and died May 13, 1880.  Her mother was b. in 1800.  M/M Hinshaw are long standing members of the united Brethren Church and in their long stay in Parke Co. they have gained the confidence of the people, among whom they have made many friends.
