According to family folklore, John's mother died when he was young and he was then raised by a black lady, possibly a servant (unconfirmed).²  

He married Nora Agnes Cook, Feb 18 1900, Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana.^2,11,12  Married by Rev. Willis Bond.¹³  Nora, daughter of Ezra Cook & Mary Haworth, was born Mar 1 1878, Illinois.^3,5,6,9,14  

John and Nora were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 6 1900), Washington Township, Hamilton County, Indiana:¹⁵

At Westfield MM on 8-27-1903, John, Nora C., & Eula A. [sic] were granted a certificate to Coloma MM¹ (Parke County, Indiana).  

At Coloma MM on 10-15-1903, John R. & wife Nora C. and daughter Zula A. were received on a certificate from Westfield MM dated 8-27-1903.¹  

John and family were shown in the 1910 census (Apr 19 1910), Bloomingdale, Parke County, Indiana:³

On Sep 12 1918 John Robert Hinshaw, age 41, registered for the World War I draft in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana.  He declared he was born May 8th 1877, and was then residing in Bloomingdale, Parke County, Indiana where he was a farmer employed by a Seth Cook of Bloomingdale.  He declared his nearest relative was Nora Agnes Hinshaw of Bloomingdale.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, dark eyes, dark hair.¹⁰  

John and family were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 9 1920), West St., Bloomingdale, Parke County, Indiana:⁵

Nora died Aug 10 1950, age 77.^2,16  

Nora's obituary was published in the "Tribune" (Terre Haute, Indiana) on August 10, 1950 (page 2).¹⁶  

John Robert Hinshaw died May 5 1957, age 79.^2,17
