Aletha had the misfortune of fire several times in her life.  When she was just seven years old her father was awakened at night by the smell of smoke, and she and her family watched their house burn to the ground, killing her grandfather, Stephen Hinshaw25 (see Stephen's page for more).  Later, when she had a home of her own, a bit of defective mortar in the chimney (presumably) caused another fire.  No one was injured, but all the treasures of a lifetime were lost.  A few years later, her son Clarence Byrd lost his home in a similar fire.25
