AGED QUAKERESS DEAD

Mrs. Hannah Cofflin Hinshaw Passes Away at Eighty-Three

[handwritten notation: "died June 2d 1897"]

Mrs. Hannah Cofflin Hinshaw died Friday night at her home, 20 State-ave. N.  She was born in North Carolina in 1814 and was the last of a family of ten children of Joseph Cofflin.  Mrs. Hinshaw was a descendent from the original Nantucket stock.  Tristram Cofflin was the original Nantucket quaker.  In 1752 a branch of the Cofflin family went to North Carolina and all the Cofflins in the West are decendents from this branch.

Mrs. Cofflin married William E. Hinshaw in 1830 and two years later they moved to Wayne county, Indiana, living there until about twenty years ago, when they came to Indianapolis.  Mr. Hinshaw died in 1891, after a married life with the deceased for sixty years.  Their wedding was celebrated in 1830, according to quaker custom, in Deepwater meeting house in North Carolina.  The curious old marriage certificate is still preserved by the family.  Mrs. Hinshaw was a member of the friends’ church in this city, but always held out against innovations, such as singing and instrumental music.

Mrs. Hinshaw’s death was caused by debility, due to an attack of grip.  The funeral will occur this afternoon at 2 o’clock.  The burial will be at Crown Hill.
