Albert and Sophia bought considerable acreage along the Salt River just south of Phoenix, Arizona.  They had a large fruit ranch, exporting dried apricots and peaches throughout Arizona and California.1

In the early 1900s, A.L. planted five palm trees, one for each of his children.  The palm trees grew for many years (and might still be today), eventually gracing the entrance to Lincoln Elementary School, which is situated on the family homestead site.  These palm trees were a gift from Luther Burbank, a friend and noted agriculturist, who had sent them with the comment "If you're going to live in a god-forsaken desert, you better have some palms".2
