Charles graduated from Williams College in 1811; he pursued his legal studies under the direction of his father; he practiced his profession at Williamstown, 1814-26, and at Northampton, Mass., 1826-37; he was district attorney for the western district of Massachusetts, 1830-37, and was from 1837 until his death one of the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts; he was a member of the Senate and House of Massachusetts; in 1840 he received the degree of LL. D. from Harvard; his rank as a lawyer and judge was very high; over fourteen hundred of his written opinions are found in the Massachusetts reports and are authority throughout the United States; was a trustee of Williams College for forty-two years; his homestead is now owned by Smith College.1,2
