He was the first Assistant Commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), serving from 1945 until his death in 1961. The high school football field in Rushville is "Robert S. Hinshaw Field" and the mental attitude award for the state championships in boys' track and field in Indiana is the "Robert S. Hinshaw Award."10
