He married Hannah Jane Fears^1,10,14 [Jane Fears^2,15, Hanner Fears¹⁶]. Hannah, daughter of Jacob Fears & Ailsey (Ailsy) Holt, was born about 1832, Alabama.^10,16,17,18

On Dec 1 1859 a Newton Hinshaw (probably this one) acquired 39.98 acres of land in Jackson County, Alabama, recorded at the Huntsville land office.¹⁹ The land patent described him as "Newton Hinshaw of Jackson County, Alabama".¹¹ On the same date land patents were also issued to George W. Hinshaw, Jasper Hinshaw, and William Hinshaw.

During the Civil War Newton Hinshaw served as a private in Company I, 55th Alabama Volunteers.^7,8,9,14 He enlisted on Nov 29 1862 at Bellefonte, Alabama.⁸ This was the same date and place where Albert Henshaw also enlisted in the same unit.

Newton also served as a private in Company K, 4th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry (Captain Rice's Company) and fought for the Confederacy.^9,14

Newton Hinshaw died Jun 6 1867.^9,12,14 Newton probably died from disease contracted during the war.¹⁴

Under a law enacted Feb 13 1891 to provide relief for Widows of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors, Hanna J. Henshaw applied for a pension on May 3 1892. In her application she stated her husband, Newton Henshaw, had been a private in Company C, 55th Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Infantry; that he came to his death from wounds received or disease contracted in the service of the Confederate States, and that his death occurred during the late war or within five years thereafter; that she had not since remarried; that she was a resident of Alabama on the 13th day of February, 1891 and was a resident on the date of the application, and that her taxable property did not exceed four hundred dollars in value.¹²

Mrs. Hannah J. Henshaw again re-applied for a widow's pension on May 20 1893, stating her husband, Newton Henshaw, had been a private in Captain Rice's Company.¹²

Hannah J. Hinshaw again re-applied for a widow's pension on Feb 10 1898, stating her husband, James N. Hinshaw, was a private in Company K, 4th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, and that he had died since the war. She recorded her address as Estill Fork, Alabama, with no taxable property and property not worth in the aggregate more than five hundred dollars and income amounting to less than five hundred dollars per year.¹²

Hannah J. Hinshaw again re-applied for a widow's pension on Jun 6 1899, stating she was a citizen on Jan 1 1899 and that she was the widow of Newton Hinshaw, a private in Company K, 4th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers, and that he died ["killed" marked-through and overwritten with "died"] on June 6, 1867. This petition required witnesses to sign and affirm that they knew Newton personally - the two signatories were James T. Hinshaw and G. W. Hinshaw.¹²

It appears that all of Newton & Hannah's children eventually settled in Arkansas (primarily Lawrence County, Arkansas).
