William Hinshaw [ID 01034] | Click here to switch to Ancestror Tree view: |
Born about 1772.3,4
He married Jane Hamm, Mar 5 1795, Surry County, North Carolina.3,4,5,6,7
A marriage bond was recorded for William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm on Mar 5 1795, Surry County, North Carolina.5
William and family were shown in the 1800 census, Wilkes County, North Carolina:8
William and Jane settled in Salem, Tennessee9 (probably "Old Salem", Franklin County, Tennessee).
William Hinshaw was shown in the 1812 Tax List of Franklin County, Tennessee.10
William Hinchey was shown in the 1820 census, Franklin County, Tennessee (page 4):11
In the 1830 census of Franklin County, Tennessee there was no record of William Hinshaw; however the 1830 census does show an unidentified Eli Henshaw in Franklin County (page 17)12 [probably Eli Hinshaw #4534].13 Apparently William had moved by 1830 (probably to Illinois - see below).
In the 1840 census, there were no Hinshaws at all in Franklin County, Tennessee (taking into consideration spelling variations).14
In the 1850 census, there were only two Hinshaws in Franklin County, Nathan Hinshaw #12020 and Eliza J. Hinshaw #2487,15 possibly William's children or grandchildren.13
William Hinchey was shown in the 1835 Illinois state census, living in Morgan County, Illinois (page 65).16 Also living in Morgan County in 1835 was an unidentified James Hinckey [Hinchey] (page 25).16 The 1830 federal census of Morgan County, Illinois also showed an unidentified Jesse Henshaw (page 36).
In an 1838 court case involving the estate of William's aunt Jane Hinshaw Hadley, William was mentioned as a son of Jane's brother Thomas (William's father), and the court documents imply that William was still then living (as of 1838). The court papers state that he lived in Illinois, although no further records have yet been found on William in Illinois.17
William Hinshaw and family were shown in the 1840 census, Jackson County, Alabama:18
Note that the presence of young children in 1840 when William was about 68 years old would suggest that there was another family living in his household, probably an as-yet-unidentified son and/or his children.13
Although it has been reported that William died in Illinois,3 since he was shown over age 60 in Jackson County, Alabama in 1840, it seems more likely that he probably died there.13
Some detective-like reasoning is required to explain William's descendency:
1) Sons William and Thomas are known to be brothers as follows: Thomas had a son George Washington Hinshaw who married Elizabeth Jane Robertson. Her sister, Nancy E. Roberson, married William. In a document written by Nancy, she states that George Washington Hinshaw was both her nephew as well as her brother-in-law, meaning Thomas must be William's brother.19
2) Son Thomas makes the connection to this William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm. Thomas' great-grandson, Thomas Benton Hinshaw, once told his own grandson, Arvil Hinshaw/Henshaw, that his great-grandmother was a Hamm,19 referring almost certainly to Jane Hamm, wife of this William Hinshaw. Therefore this William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm are believed to be the parents of both William and Thomas.
Speculation: Nathan Hinshaw #12020 and Eliza J. Hinshaw #2487 might be additional children of this family.13
