The preparative meeting complains of Abel Hinshaw for accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline - he produced an offering condemning his misconduct which this meeting receives as satisfactory.

About 1827 or so Abel and family moved to Highland County, Ohio, staying about two years13 (and then apparently returning to North Carolina).

On May 5 1830 Abel Hinshaw was issued an Apprentice Bond as master of a Polly Bookout (who was probably Nancy's sister or other close relative).  Randolph County records (NC State Archives call no. C.R. 081.101.3) noted that Polly Bookout was an orphan, "9 last 12 Jan".14

The following biographical sketch of Abel Hinshaw was written by gggg-grandson Greg Hinshaw:28

Abel Hinshaw was born in Randolph County, North Carolina on May 13, 1799 and was a son of Absalom Hinshaw, Jr. and Elizabeth (Hinshaw) Hinshaw.  He had a birthright in the Society of Friends, being a member of Holly Spring Preparative Meeting of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting.  On October 13, 1818, he married Nancy Bookout, a daughter of John and Zilpha (Wright) Bookout.  On May 15, 1819, Abel "condemned his marriage contrary to discipline" in Holly Spring Monthly Meeting and retained in membership.  From this evidence, it is obvious that Nancy was not a Quaker.

On October 16, 1830, Abel was granted a certificate to Bloomfield Monthly Meeting in Indiana by Holly Spring Monthly Meeting.  In the fall of 1830, Abel loaded his family into a wagon and started west toward Indiana.  They arrived in Clinton County, Ohio in 1831.  Abel's certificate of membership from Holly Spring was received at Newberry Monthly Meeting on January 23, 1832.  Nancy had joined by request on November 21, 1831.  The family remained in Clinton County for three years and six months, then moved to Randolph County, Indiana.  On March 21, 1836 Abel and Nancy were granted a certificate to Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting in Indiana.  They settled on an eighty-acre farm in the southwest quarter of Section 22, near Snow Hill, Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana.  They apparently entered the land in 1834.  Their house was located back a lane on the north side of 600 S, one-half mile west of "the Pike," now U. S. 27.  Within a few months of their reception at Cherry Grove, the overseers of the local meeting at Cherry Grove reported Abel Hinshaw for drinking spirituous liquors excessively.  He was disowned from membership on October 12, 1836.  Nancy was complained of for non-attendance and joining the Anti-Slavery Friends and was disowned on November 9, 1844.

Abel and Nancy farmed and raised eleven children (one child died in infancy).  The 1882 "History of Randolph County, Indiana" records a bit about Abel Hinshaw in a small segment about Nancy.  It says, "Her husband was an early pioneer of Randolph, being in politics a Democrat of the Jacksonian type, and his aged widow is still enthusiastic in the same faith".  Though Abel was a Democrat, the descendants of his son, Jacob B. Hinshaw, and daughter, Mary Hinshaw Daly, are still among some of the most active Republicans in Randolph County today.

On March 9, 1867, Abel and Nancy were once again received in membership in Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends.  This correlated with the organization of Snow Hill Friends Meeting, established in "Hinshaw School House," at the end of their lane.  According to their grandson, Meredith Hinshaw, the Friends of Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting became suspicious of the Democratic political leaning of many of the members at Snow Hill and discontinued to the meeting.  There is no evidence that Abel and Nancy were ever dropped from membership again, but they evidently did not take an active part in any local meetings.

About 1873, Abel was stricken with paralysis.  He suffered a second stroke in May, 1876.  He died at home on June 11, 1876.  Funeral services were conducted at Mount Zion M. E. Church, with Rev. Nathan T. Butts, Methodist minister, officiating.  Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.  The farm was sold to his son-in-law, W. A. W. Daly within a few weeks.
