Alfred's obituary was published as follows:2

Alfred C. Groth, 91, of Winchester, passed away Saturday evening, February 2, 2013, leaving behind a life filled with accomplishments and most importantly his loving family.

He was born November 7, 1921 in Marburg, Germany to the late Frederick and Elisa (Finger) Groth.  He was 4 ½ years old when his parents moved to United States to reside in Illinois.  Eventually, the Groth family moved to Randolph County, where Alfred would call home.

Alfred graduated in 1940 from Wayne High School in Union City, Ind.  The move to Randolph County would lead him to the love of his life, Mary Edna Hinshaw.  Alfred and Mary were married July 12, 1941 at the Friends parsonage in Winchester.  They shared their lives for 72 years.  In 1943, Alfred would stand amongst an unfamiliar crowd earning his U.S. citizenship.  Alfred immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving 1943 to 1945 in World War II in the South Pacific.  Upon returning to the United States, he was employed at Overmyer Mould.  While working as a tool and die maker full time, he also maintained a family farm.  He retired from Overmyer Mould in 1980 after 42 ½ years of service.

Two years after retiring, the family would be struck by tragedy with the death of their son, Kurt R. Groth.  Knowing the love that his son had for his Real Estate and Auctioneer business, he became a licensed real estate broker and auctioneer.  After six years in the business, Alfred would retire for a second time with Mary to Leesburg, Fla.  Alfred enjoyed sailing and spent many hours on wood working pieces such as ornate clocks and the most detailed scaled churches.

He was a member of the Winchester Lodge No. 56, F. & A.M., Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of Fort Wayne, Scottish Rite 32° Mason and a member of the Saratoga Lions Club.  Alfred served in many community roles in Winchester and Leesburg.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Alfred C. Groth II (wife Linda) of Winchester and Frederick W. Groth (fiancée, Julie McDonnell) of Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren, Elisa Groth, Erin Groth, Laura (husband Jacob) Oswalt, Candace M. Groth, Caroline P. Groth and Frederick H. Groth; and one cousin, Will Jean Aldworth of Lockport, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Anna Loy; two sons, Chris Paul Groth and Kurt R. Groth; and a daughter-in-law, Debra J. (Priest) Groth.

To honor the wishes of Alfred there will be no calling or public service.  A private service for family will be held at a later date.  Oswalt Family Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Winchester, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Services of Randolph County, 133 N Meridian St., Winchester, IN 47394; Winchester Friends Church, 124 E. Washington St., Winchester, IN 47394; or State of the Heart Hospice, 410 W. Votaw, Portland, IN 47371.

Cards may be sent to Mary Edna Groth c/o Friends Fellowship Community, 2030 Chester Blvd., Richmond, IN 47374.
