Sybil Henshaw, who did considerable genealogical research, stated that after their father died, James and his brother William were both taken and raised (or apprenticed) by Benjamin Henshaw, their first cousin.1  

A James Henshaw is shown in the 1790 census, Litchfield, Litchfield County, Connecticut:2

It is not known with certainty that the above census data refers to this James Henshaw.  

A James Henshaw, possibly a son of this James, is shown in the 1800 census, Cayuga County, New York.3  

A James Henshaw, possibly a son of this James, is again shown in the 1810 census, Cayuga County, New York.4
