In 1863 Barney, along with his brother-in-law Jerry Young, moved to Iowa, wintering at McKnight's Point11 (Davis County, Iowa). In May of 1864, Barney turned the first furrow in Powhatan Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa.2,15 He served as one of the first judges at the first election in Powhatan and later three years as a trustee.2
