Ruth E. Hinshaw

BLOOMINGTON - Ruth Elizabeth Hinshaw, 76, of 925 W. Wood St., Bloomington, died at 6:43 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 3, 2008) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.  

Her memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Ric Schneider officiating.  Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bloomington, followed by a luncheon at St. Mary's Parish Hall, Bloomington.  She was cremated.  The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ruth Hinshaw Estate c/o St. Mary's Church, 527 W. Jackson St., Bloomington, IL 61701.  

Ruth was born Jan. 15, 1931, in Bloomington, the daughter of Marius and Marie Campbell Julian.  She married Charles Deane Hinshaw on Sept. 13, 1952, in Bloomington.  They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage and he survives.  

She is survived by her 10 children, Ruth Ann (Doug) Smith, Mesa, Ariz.; Joseph Hinshaw, Tempe, Ariz.; George (Cynthia) Hinshaw, Edward (Angie) Hinshaw, Don Hinshaw, Jerry Hinshaw, Jane Wimp, Jim Hinshaw and Karen Hinshaw, all of Bloomington; and Nancy (Bernie) Feldman, Syracuse N.Y.; also by 22 grandchildren, Parker, Amanda, Cody, Ryan, Deane, Tess, Justin, Matt, Chad, Dana, Gage, Sarah, Christina, Michael, Jimi, Joe, James, Jonathon, Jessica, Trish, Steven and Austin; also one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose.  Also surviving are two brothers, Joseph Julian, Bloomington, and Phillip Julian, Maine.  She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Paul Julian, Robert Julian and Harold Julian; and granddaughter, Laura Jean Feldman.  

Ruth attended St. Mary's Grade School, graduated from Holy Trinity High School and attended Illinois State University.  

While attending St. Mary's School, she began playing the organ at age 13 for the church.  She continued on and later became the director of the music ministry.  She organized and directed the 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday choirs and played the organ for the 4 p.m. Saturday Mass.  She played at weddings and funerals and most weekend Masses throughout her life.  

Ruth was a member of the St. Anne's Society and the Bereavement Committee at St. Mary's Parish.  She was a member of the Parish Pastoral Council and liturgy committee, and is a past deanery chairman of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.  She organized the lectors, altar servers, eucharistic ministers and cantors.  She assisted in setting up and organizing the library at St. Mary's School.  She helped to organize the annual appreciation dinner and was a sponsor for RCIA.  

In the fall of 2006, she was awarded the Pere Marquette Award for her outstanding service to St. Mary's Parish in Bloomington, where she served for more than 60 years.  It was celebrated at a Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in Peoria, presided over by Bishop Daniel Jenky.  

In past years she worked from home, typing for the Rabbit Breeders Association.  She was a supporter of the Friends of Miller Park Zoo.  She supported and enjoyed the musical arts.  She was a collector of dolls, angels and Native American art.  She was a member of the PTA and the Mother's Club.  

Ruth dedicated her life to the church and her family and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
