Description

There are two species of crappie, the black crappie and the white crappie. There is no apparent difference in their bait preference or in methods used to catch them. These species are most often taken from lakes, where catches of 1 to 1.5 pound fish are common and 2 pounders are reported occasionally. Fish near stumps, brush piles, or other such shelter. Smaller minnows are the most common bait and these should be hooked high in the back on a small hook with a bobber 2 or 3 feet above the hook. Worms can also be used in early spring. When crappie spawn, (April and May), leadhead jigs and spinners become productive and may be used. Usually the best months are March, April and May. Fishing picks back up in the fall. Use a small bobber when ice fishing as the bite is gentle and the fish are sluggish.

Please check the fishing advisories for information.
