DR. ARVIL JAMES HINSHAW, 83, of Beaumont died October 24, 1999 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at 10:00 AM in Trinity United Methodist Church followed by burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Broussard's Mortuary, Beaumont. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 12:00 Noon until 5:00 PM at the Mortuary and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the McKnight Parlor at Trinity United Methodist Church. A native of Iowa, he lived in Beaumont most of his life. He was a retired General Thoracic Surgeon and a United States World War II Navy Veteran. Survivors include his wife Thelma Hinshaw of Beaumont; sons, Rex Arvil Hinshaw of Houston and Dr. James Chadwick Hinshaw of Great Falls, Montana; daughters, Susan Anne Hinshaw Doss of Bryan and Pamela Jane Hinshaw Pugel of Mercer Island, Washington; and eight grandchildren.

Thelma Rushforth Hinshaw BEAUMONT -- Thelma Rushforth Hinshaw of Beaumont, Texas passed away peacefully in the loving care of her children on Tuesday, February 8, 2005.
Mrs. Hinshaw was born August 15, 1922, in Methuen, Massachusetts at the family home to Charles and Lena Rushforth. She became a resident of Beaumont for over fifty years with her husband following a nursing career at Mass General Hospital in Boston. She was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Friendship Class. She will be missed by all those who she loved so dearly, and remembered especially for her deep love of music and passion for life and her family.
Her husband, Dr. Arvil James Hinshaw and her son, Robert Chase Hinshaw preceded her in death.
Survivors include her four children, Rex A. Hinshaw and wife Becky of Houston, Dr. James C. Hinshaw and wife Debbie of Billings, Montana, Susan H. Doss and husband Dr. David R. Doss of Bryan, Texas and Pamela H. Pugel and husband Chris of Mercer Island, Washington; her sister, Shirley Kruschwitz of Windermere, Florida; her brothers, Calvin Rushforth of Sarasota, Florida and Bill Rushforth of Rancho Palos Verde, California; eight grandchildren, Amy Doss, Matthew Doss and Sallie Doss all of Bryan, Texas, Ashley Hinshaw and Tyler Hinshaw both of Billings, Montana, Phillip Pugel, Calvin Pugel and Samuel Pugel all of Mercer Island, Washington; and many nieces, nephews and family.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2005, in the Dishman Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church under the direction of Broussard's, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2005, at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 3430 Harrison Avenue, Beaumont, Texas 77702 or to Alzheimer?s Association, 2909 W. Holcombe Road, Houston, Texas 77025.

Discovered blueprints launch investigation into origins of Beaumont home When Jon and Phoebe Bassana found rolls and rolls of blueprints tucked away in a built-in storage cabinet of their new home, they had no idea that the Beaumont residence had ties to a renowned University of Texas professor of architecture.
R. Gommel Roessner designed many mid-century modern homes and businesses in the Austin area -- where he taught and operated his private practice -- but the Bassana’s home is believed to be the only known project that Roessner completed in Southeast Texas. In 1968, the original owners, Dr. Arvil Hinshaw and his wife, Thelma, commissioned Roessner to design the home. Dr. Hinshaw passed away in 1999, and after Mrs. Hinshaw’s passing in 2005, the home went on the market. The Bassanas -- who were looking to move back to the Beaumont area -- fell in love with the home and settled in to raise their growing family there.

While Roessner is known for his innovative style, he did not sacrifice practicality for the sake of showmanship. Attention to detail and functionality resulted in a home that was family-friendly, even by 21st century standards. It became clear -- by the correspondence included with the blueprints and the meticulousness of the plans -- that Mrs. Hinshaw played an integral role in choosing the design and specifications to make the house not only a modern showpiece but also a functional home where a family could live comfortably and efficiently. Even the unique floorplan was designed with family in mind. The open living areas and u-shaped layout of the bedrooms and bathrooms result in a home that brings the family together but allows everyone his or her own space. Vaulted shiplap ceilings throughout much of the home also contribute to the open feel. The Bassana’s young twin boys have plenty of room to play, and even multiple rainy days in a row -- as is common in Southeast Texas these days -- aren’t such a bad thing.
Other than a few updates, like flooring and kitchen cabinetry, the house is essentially the same as it was five decades ago. The Bassanas have managed to add their own personal touches without compromising the historical or architectural integrity of the home. As Phoebe put it, they wanted to "respect the spirit of the home." They even kept the original range top and landline telephone installed on a kitchen wall. Walking through the home, one senses a graceful merging of past and present, where form and function come together to create a timeless space.

All of those details carefully planned and carried out -- as evident in 10 ten [sic] plus rolls of blueprints -- came to be known fondly as The Hinshaw House. Jon and Phoebe Bassana knew they’d stumbled upon something worth sharing with the world, so they contacted the UT at Austin School of Architecture and inquired about whether or not the archival library would be interested in obtaining the blueprints. The curator was more than pleased to receive the donation.
"The archives had a lot of his work, a lot of his drawings," Jon said, but there was a missing link, which turned out to be the Hinshaw house. The Bassanas donated the drawings to UT, and the blueprints are now a treasured part of the university’s esteemed Roessner collection.
