[John Charles] Blackledge and Rufus Elbert Blackledge, who were the sons of Hiram Blackledge, moved to Sterling, Kans. from Winchester, Indiana.  Then from the Sterling, Ks. area they moved to Jet at the time of the opening of the Cherokee Strip for settlement".8

"William Levi was married to Pearl Hinshaw and bought a relinquishment from Charles Hinshaw, his brother-in-law, soon after the opening of the Strip.  There were five families of Hinshaws who settled within a mile of each other in the vicinity of six miles northeast of Jet in the East Saline school district.  They were Hanna Hinshaw, the widowed mother, Mrs. Al Lotton (Della), Mrs. Henry (Myrtle) Haslam, Charles Hinshaw, and Ollie Hinshaw.  They all took quarter sections in that area, except the farm my father [Wm. L.] purchased which only contained three 40-acre tracts".8

Obituary:10

Blockledge [sic] Edna Pearl, daughter of Ira J and Hannah Hinshaw, born in Winchester, Indiana, Jan 15th, 1872 and departed this world July 5th, 1902, age 30 years 6 months and 20 days.  The deceased was married to her bereft husband W.L. Blockledge [sic] Aug 13th, 1890 and to this union were born 2 girls and 2 boys who will sadly miss the patient mother's care.  Pearl leaves in sorrow that tongue has never been able to express beside her four little ones and heartbroken husband, an aged mother who was left a widow 24 years ago, two brothers and two sisters, who with their families happily lived near one another, when came this sad occurance that causes us to walk through the shadow of death.  Pearl sought and found the conquerer of life's tempest at the age of 15 years, under the pastorate of Rev Brink, in Sterling Kansas of the methodist church.  She remained a member of such church until 4 years ago when she with her husband joined the Brethren Church of East Salem.  Pearl has been a constant sufferer for years, so patient, so trustful, so obedient, so faithful was she to her known duties that even her near friends did not realize her dangerous bodily condition.  Hence her Demise was a shock to all.  But she has only out stripped us in the race perhaps a few days, and oh, that we may have the christian fortitude that faith, that hope, that charity, that was so exemplified in this Christian mother's character.
Dearest daughter, sister, mother.
Christian Neighbor, friend so dear,
Thou art gone to join thy father
While we are left so lonely here.
Thou hast answered Jesus call,
Paid the debt we all must pay;
God hast prepared a home for all,
Who long for that eternal day.
Oh help us Lord to live for THee
THat we may greet those gone before,
That heavens beauties we may see,
Singing his praises evermore.
We bid thee, Pearl, a short farewell,
We are gathering one by one;
God has said with thee 'tis well,
Thy work is done, well done.
Funeral services at East Salem at 3pm, Sunday, July 6th, conducted by Rev.  Strausse.  Interment in the Trall cemetary.  A large concourse of friends were in attendace, being over 60 vehichles in the procession--
