Born 7-1-1818, Lost Creek MM, Jefferson County, Tennessee.1,4,5

He married Elizabeth Ann Lewis1,4,5,7,12 [Betsy Ann Lewis3,5], 10-11-18431,4,5,7,12, Friendsville, Newberry MM, Blount County, Tennessee1,4,5,7,12.  Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Lewis & Kesiah (Kezia) Perkins, was born 9-5-1824, Blount County, Tennessee.4,5,6

At Newberry MM on 8-5-1848, David & family were granted a certificate to Pleasant Plain MM, Jefferson County, Iowa (with brother Zimri).4

According to family lore, David and Betsy decided to leave Tennessee since it was a slave state; they owned no slaves (and as Friends could not own slaves) and were concerned that their land might be confiscated.13  But family lore mentions that there was one Tennessee Hinshaw (which one unknown) who did at one time own a slave, but gave him his freedom.  This former slave, Walker Waldon, moved with the Hinshaw families to Iowa, always remaining with his former master.13

At Pleasant Plain MM (Iowa) on 11-11-1848, David & wife Elizabeth Ann & minor children Uriah & Henry Lewis, also Zimriah, were received on a certificate from Newberry MM, Tennessee, dated 8-5-1848.5

Soon after arriving in Iowa, David purchased a claim of 160 acres of land.9

David appeared in the 1849 Tax List of Jasper County, Iowa, with a taxable valuation of $250.00.14

In Jasper County, Iowa only six school districts had been organized by the fall of 1849-50.  David Hinshaw was recorded as treasurer for district No.2, Newton Township, receipted for $18.08.15

David and family lived adjacent to his widowed mother's household, with several of his siblings living at home with their mother.  Also living nearby was brother Evan.

David and family were again shown in the 1860 census, Mariposa Township, Jasper County, Iowa:17

David eventually grew his farm to 280 acres and became a well-known grain farmer and breeder of hogs and cattle.9

In April of 1867, David and Betsy and family traveled back to Tennessee to visit.  They drove a steer (ox) and a milk cow hitched to a two-wheeled ox cart.  Their camping equipment and small children rode in the cart, but David and Betsy walked most of the way.  Each night they buried a bean pot filled with beans and water in the hot ashes of their campfire.  By morning they were cooked and kept for the noon meal.  (as of 1971 that bean pot was in the possession of granddaughter Zola Alice Trout Cleverley).13

When in Illinois, they came upon a railroad track; David said he was going to wait to see his first railroad train, so they waited, and the next day he saw his first train.13

By the last of May they had arrived in Tennessee; they spent the summer there, then started for home in August.  When they got as far as Keokuk, Iowa, the oxen were so sore-footed that they sold them, got on a paddle boat and came up the Mississippi River to east of Iowa City.  There they boarded a stage coach and came on home arriving in late fall.13
