Duane Eldon Hinshaw

Duane Eldon Hinshaw of Sumner, Washington died January 3, 2006.    He was 89 years old.    Duane was born July 11, 1916, in Goldendale, Washington.    He attended Enumclaw High School, but moved to Kent during his senior year.    He graduated from Kent High School in 1932 and went on to the University of Washington.

He was an Enumclaw businessman from 1938 - 1970, owning Payless Food Store and later, Hinshaw's Marine and Chainsaw.    In 1961 he began selling Honda motorcycles from his small Enumclaw business being one of the first Honda motorcycle dealers in the United States.    As a motorcycle dealer, he opened Hinshaw's Honda in Auburn in 1964 and another store in Puyallup in 1966.    Duane became one of the first Honda Automobile Dealers in the nation when Honda began importing cars in 1971.    He opened the Acura Dealership in Fife in 1986.    Even though he achieved much success as a businessman, he remained humble and unassuming with a great sense of humor.    His focus of interest was family and friends.    Duane's favorite pastime was going to Sullivan Bay, B.C. every summer with his wife, Betty, and his dog, Pepper, to enjoy boating and the quiet pristine wilderness from their floating home.

He was preceded in death by his son, Burke Hinshaw in 1998.    He is survived by his wife, Betty Hinshaw of Sumner; son Paul Hinshaw of Federal Way; daughter Gayl Hinshaw of Auburn; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom love him and miss him very much.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at Auburn Senior Center on Saturday, January 14th, from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.    The address is 808 9th Street S.E., Auburn, WA, 253-931-3016.    Remembrances may be made to The Boy Scouts of America and the Salvation Army.
