Born Apr 12 1841, Randolph County, Indiana.^{50,191,a,b,c,d,e,f,g}

Elijah's obituary showed he was born in Randolph County, Indiana,^h and several censuses confirm that he was born in Indiana,^c,d,e,f but two 1920 census entries show he was born in Iowa.^g,i It appears that the 1920 census entries must be in error, as his parents were known to have been living in Randolph County, Indiana at the time of his birth.⁴⁹

After his father died, when Elijah was just two years old, Elijah's brother and sister went to live with the family of uncle Thomas.^j It is not known what became of Elijah, although it is possible that he went to live with his uncle Elijah. See: Elijah Hinshaw.

At Cherry Grove MM on 12-14-1850, Elijah, a minor, was granted a certificate to Back Creek MM.⁴⁹

At Back Creek MM on 1-16-1850, Elijah, a minor, was received on a certificate from Cherry Grove MM. Note date inconsistency with the above.⁵⁰

Elija served in Company A, 137th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry.^k

He married Ruth Sturgeon, Oct 9 1864, Howard County, Indiana.^l,m Elijah married Ruth while he was on leave from the Union Army.^h

Ruth, daughter of Taylor Sturgeon & Eunice Smith, was born Dec 2 1847, on a farm near Lake Cicott, Cass County, Indiana.^{n,o,p,c,d,e,f,q} (Ruth shown age 4 in the 1850 census).^r

Elijah P. Hinshaw died Dec 23 1920, Star City, Van Buren Township, Pulaski County, Indiana; buried row 7, IOOF Cemetery, Star City, Pulaski County, Indiana.^o,b,h,t Medical: Elijah died from a cerebral hemorrhage.^u He had been an invalid for over a year from a previous stroke.^h

On Dec 21 1920 Ruth Hinshaw again applied for a Civil War Pension as widow of veteran Elijah P. Hinshaw.^s

Widow Ruth was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 22 1930), living in the household of daughter Elvira in Van Buren Township, Pulaski County, Indiana:^q

Hinshaw, Ruth, mother-in-law, age 83, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; widow.

Living nearby in 1930 was the family of son Elmer.^v

Widow Ruth was also shown in the 1930 census (Apr 3 1930), [apparently doubly-enumerated], living in the household of son Perry in Union Township, White County, Indiana:^w

Ruth died Feb 3 1933, at the home of her son Perry, Monticello, White County, Indiana; buried row 7, IOOF Cemetery, Star City, Pulaski County, Indiana.^o,p,t Ruth's obituary stated that she had been in "feeble health" for several years.^p
