Arlene Margaret Hinshaw
Sept. 15, 1934 -- April 28, 2010
Sonora resident Arlene Margaret Hinshaw died April 28 at a Sonora care center. She was 75.
She was born in Rossland, British Columbia, Canada, to Joshua and Geraldine Thompson, and grew up in Trail, British Columbia, Canada.
In 1952, she came to the United States to attend college at the College of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., where she studied occupational therapy. There she met her future husband, Robert Hinshaw, and they were married on June 9, 1954.
After several job-related moves, they settled in Marin County in 1965 where they raised their two sons.
She was active in volunteer school and hospital work, and received several awards for her service. She operated the hospital gift shop at Ross General Hospital for two years and later opened her own gift shop after moving to Benicia in 1979. This was followed by 12 years in partnership in a dollhouse and miniature shop in Benicia.
After moving to Sonora in 1991, she and her husband became involved in the antique business. They have rented space in local stores since 1996.
She loved Siamese cats, her family said.
No local services are planned.
