Allie Hinshaw Calkins
Sept. 17, 1902 - Jan. 5, 2007Sonora resident Allie Hinshaw Calkins died Jan. 5 at a Sonora care center. She was 104.
She was born in Milton-Freewater, Ore., as the youngest of five children to Aaron Tuttle and Hannah Moore Smith. She later moved to Kennewick, Wash., where she attended elementary and high school. She graduated from Pacific College business school (now George Fox University).
She worked in the original First National Bank in Newberg, Ore., as a secretary. She married Cecil Freeman Hinshaw on Sept. 6, 1930. He died in 1943. She later married Clifford Calkins, who died in 1983.
Mrs. Calkins moved to the Oregon coast in 1956 to what is now Lincoln City, until she moved to Sonora in 1994 to be closer to her son and grandson.
She was an active member of the Congregational Church, was a member of the Music Club and Nelscott Friendship Club, all in Lincoln City.
Mrs. Calkins is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Arlene Hinshaw of Sonora; grandsons, Donald Hinshaw of Richmond and Gary Hinshaw of University Park, Md.; and four great-grandchildren.
She will be interred at Friends Cemetery in Newberg.
