Francis was named after Francis T. King, a wealthy businessman of Baltimore and President of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. The first years after his parents were married, they attended Yearly Meeting together; they were both deeply impressed by the visiting Francis T. King, and Thomas Hinshaw helped in showing Francis T. King the North Carolina meetings. The day after they had visited Cane Creek, Thomas said (to his wife, Mary Barker Hinshaw) "Mary, if we should ever have children in the years to come, let's name one - if we should have a boy - Francis T., after the most gracious visitor we have ever had in our home". When Francis was born, a letter was sent to Francis T. King of Baltimore, informing him of their choice of a name in his honor.8
At Holly Spring MM on 1-20-1883, Frances T. was granted a certificate to Greenwood MM, Hamilton County, Indiana.5
He married Emma Jane Harvey1,9 [Emma Ann Harvey6,9], Mar 1 18831,9 [Mar 7 188310,11, Mar 8 18832], Hamilton County, Indiana1,9. Emma, daughter of James J. Harvey & Rebecca Jane Rayle, was born Feb 6 1858, Indiana.1,2,3,6 Emma was a lifelong Quaker.2
At Greenwood MM on 3-26-1883, Francis T. was received on a certificate from Holly Spring MM, N.C. - endorsed to Poplar Ridge MM.1

In his childhood, Francis had traveled with his mother to Indiana to be reunited with his father, who had been forceably conscripted into the Confederate army and then arrested by the Union army, finally fleeing to Indiana (where he and the family found sanctuary til the end of the war). In the early 1880s Francis decided that he would like to spend one summer in Indiana working on the Harvey farm. A biography of his parents noted:8
Handsome young man that he was, it was only natural for him and the attractive young Emma Harvey to begin thinking in terms of life-long associations. The summer passed very quickly. Upon returning to North Carolina, Francis ate very little, and was moody and disconsolate. One day Mary said to him quite simply, "Francis, is it the girl?"
"Yes, Mother."
"Then I think thee had better go back to Indiana."This was not an easy thing for her to say. Advising a son to go to a distant state to live meant a lifetime of separation. And Mary loved her children dearly. Fortunately she had the strength of character to think in terms of their highest good.
As soon as affairs could be arranged, his parents gave Francis his "inheritance" in terms of land. This was the north part of the original Jacob Hinshaw home place, where Stephen's sister Ann Hinshaw Upton, had lived for a time. To translate this inheritance into liquid assets, the land was sold to Alfred Macon. It has remained in the Macon family to this day.
When all arrangements had been completed, Mary Hinshaw helped Francis pack his clothes and personal belongings for shipment to Indiana. During this time she tried very hard to appear happy and cheerful, but all the while she was "crying inside". The day of departure came. As her oldest son went out of sight, she wondered why love requires such great sacrifices!

Francis Hinshaw came from Indiana to visit as often as he could. They had been "lonesome for him" through the many long years since he had gone away, although his frequent letters kept them well informed as to all that was happening to him and his family.
One especially memorable visit from the Indian Hinshaws occurred in the summer of 1898 when Francis and Emma Hinshaw, and their two boys, Asa and Hervey, arrived. As was the custom during those years, preparation was made for an all-inclusive family picture. A traveling photographer was secured for the great occasion. The east porch of the Lewis Hinshaw home was used for the background.
Francis settled in Hamilton County, Indiana, living on his farm on Millspring road, 4 1/2 miles northwest of Westfield, between Westfield and Carmel. He was a farmer and conducted the elevators at Hortonville and Nora.2
