William was educated in the district school at Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and at the Academy at Leicester. In 1826 he entered the store of David and John Henshaw of Boston, druggists, and under them and subsequent partners he learned the business, and when of age he opened a store for himself in Boston. In 1837 he took his brother, Joseph W. Ward, into partnership and continued there until he became a partner with John Henshaw.²
