There is a story about Leonard's family that has been handed down:3
While Leonard was away at war, Susan took up doing needlework to make ends meet.  At one point the neighbor woman died leaving eight children behind; Susan took them in too.  While the northern army was doing a sweep south they came upon her farm and demanded her grain.  She told them she had none.  She was lying of course.  Earlier she had had all the children gather up the grain and hide it in a trap door under a rug and the dinner table.  When the soldiers showed up, she had the children sit on the chairs around the table.  They left after useless search.  After several hours, they came back.  They told her they knew she had grain and they wanted it.  She told them to go out into the field and gather it up.  She and the children had scattered it all over the fields.  They must have taken pity on her because they left without doing any harm.
